If you're a beginning gardener whose potted plants always die so you figure you better buy a book to make sense of things... this isn't the book for you. Actually I'm not really sure this is a book for anyone other than a home designer?
Instead of offering tips and insight on how to grow things, this book is essentially 200 pages of how to arrange flowers inside pots.
Not really a fan.

Gorgeous photographs and I enjoy that they have a lot of different types of plant suggestions. There were several Container Gardening books that had more ivy like plants growing in the pots and hardly any flowers. If I am going to take care of plants, I want beautiful color as a reward. It has a lot of info but I like the diagram-like layout. Items are divided into sun, sun/part shade, shade. I feel like Goldilocks...this book is just right! Great color photos for inspiration and instruction on every page. It's organized into clear chapters. I jumped in on # 5 "More Impact; Less Work." There is sophisticated inspiration, cost saving tips, examples for spaces large and small, and very clear, practical instructions. All that along with lots of plants, clearly named, available at local garden center, this is a book I'll use again and again. Penguin's Reading the Year Challenge: May - Use a book to get closer to natureThere is some good information in this book. It is just presented very haphazardly. The pictures may be pretty to look at, but the organization is completely whack. It's almost impossible to know what plants can grow in what zones, even with the zone map and the plant reference guide -- both of which are buried in the back. I also suspect that climate change has rendered the zone map worthless, but of course that isn't BH&G's fault.
I did get some good ideas and learned a few general things about how not to kill plants, but I'd recommend this only to experienced gardeners who want to try some pretty designs. And who have all sorts of time and energy and mad glue-gun skillz. Which is soooo not me. I did spend a good chunk of this afternoon re-potting my philodendrons, and I feel good about it. I even managed to get them into the garage before the storm hit. But for anything more ambitious, I expect I will simply throw myself on the mercy of one of the City's master gardeners.

This is a good manual for growing many kinds of plants in many kinds of containers. The photos are inspiring.
I enjoyed this book, especially the photographs! Beautiful images that sparked idea after idea for my own container garden.
